Heading to Tobermory

May 28, 2019

We finally left Bridgeview Marina in Sarnia and headed for Tobermory at 7:30 am.  Leaving the Sin Clair river entering Lake Huron, we came across several large logs that could make damages.  Brian called Sarnia coast guard to notify.  Shortly after, they made an announcement to all boaters on Chanel 16.

The trip was very cold and foggy.  We managed to keep warm by bundling up and starting the generator to turn on our electric heat on.  Between that and hot coffee/hot chocolate, we were able to manage.  Very thankful for our full cockpit enclosure.

We crossed paths much time during the night with freighters which we were able to pick up on our AIS.  We were on the same path with American Integrity vessel for a while.

Sleeping in shifts was difficult, but we will get the hang of it.  We didn't want to arrive to the Cape Hurd channel in the dark, so we decided to slow down our speed to arrive in some day light.  We arrived at the approach to the Cape Hurd channel at 5:30 am and was attacked by a bat. It tried to land on the boat to suck our blood, but gave up........at lease we think it did!  We may be surprised when we raise the main sail.

By 6:30 am we were tide up at the Tobermory Harbour wall waiting for the fuel dock to open.  We walked around and had a warm breakfast at the Leeside restaurant.

While waiting we talked to a gentleman who let us know about the off season discounted rates.  We ended up booking for a full month at the docks for a fraction of the price we were paying at Bridgeview Marina.  This will allow us to continue boat preparations to wait for the temperature to warm up.

Hurry up summer!

Early Spring Boat Prep

April 27, 2019

Brian and I really enjoyed washing, sanding, and painting the bottom of the boat.......NOT!

We had to strip the old VC17 bottom paint to apply the new salt water friendly anti-fouling so that we can have smooth sailing.  We did this over a period of 4 weeks.  Sanding the bottom was the hardest task to do, thank goodness for Brain's perseverance.  Elayna was also a great help with painting.

We ended up doing 4 layers in total.  The first one was black, second blue, and followed with 2 more black layers.  This will allow us to determine our next time to sand and re-paint.  Hopefully, this will not be for another 2 years....who knows!
